It's been mentioned that Shiv came out of a World of Darkness tabletop came. One of my friends from high school worked for White Wolf in the early 90's and I started running a chronicle as soon as I returned from Japan in 1992. It started as a Vampire: the Masquerade game, but as we neared the close of the first story, the players wanted to branch out a bit. The second "book" of the chronicle started as a Mage: the Ascension Game. As the story progressed, we included vampires from the first book. The third book included player character immortals, ghouls, and werewolves. As Jess mentioned, trying to mesh the different systems got a bit messy.
Siobhan was introduced as a possible love interest and moral test for one of the player characters, a mage named Mallory. She made her first appearance in 1996. To strike at Siobhan's vampire grandmother, Mallory had been ordered to assassinate the teenage non-player character. He did not carry out the order and believed Shiv killed in a separate attempt on her life.
Shiv returned to the game in 1999, after having received training as a novice mage. She had been expelled from both the Verbena and Order of Hermes and is trying to study magic on her own and under the loose tutelage of Dr. Norman Jacobs. From there, Shiv took on a character of her own, eventually leading a small group of young mages in the city of Chicago.
Many of Shiv's powers first emerged in that WOD game, including wings, warding electronic tacking devices, and a prehensile tail.
When I first started playing CoH, I was having real trouble mastering the game and trying to define a character for my first toon, Samurai Indigo. I pulled Shiv out of my character library thinking her well suited for BS/Reg and knowing that she spoke in a very distinctive voice. Roleplaying her wouldn't pose any difficulties and would give me a chance to learn the game.
What I created as a character I didn't expect to survive more than a few sessions has now outlived nearly all of her cohort.
