((I don't go looking for relationships for my characters. Sometimes things just click between two toons and things take on a life of their own. A out of game IC chat over breakfast sparked this relationship between Dani and Chance. Taken with a girl, Chance went back to the tried and true approach of wooing her with a mix tape.

This was Camille and my first collaboration.))

No Nina Simone? What was I thinking?

The professor droned on. "The Battle of Sekigahara consolidated Japan under a single ruler…."

No Coltrane? Fuckity, fuck, fuck, fuck. Keeping Barry White off of there was probably a good idea. Chance didn't what to give her the wrong idea.

Just what is your idea, boyo? Dead girl? Just somebody. Somebody who seems pretty cool. I should have made a cover for the case. "Music for Purpose Driven Girls" That sounds good. Hmm, not really a girl and woman doesn't have the same ring to it.

Nightwish? Nah. Apocalyptica might have been cool.

"Tokugawa cleverly offered many of the western daimyo land and leniency should they fight for him, switching allegiance mid battle."

Public Enemy. Chance shook his head. Fight the Power. Rap has lost so much of its soul lately. Abney Park. The world needs more Abney Park. Why the fuck won't they tour?

Lady Gaga. He blushed. It's still a great pop song. Some might argue she had better fashion sense than many that lived in Millennium City.

Chance winced, running his hand down the side of his face. What was he thinking? Just a girl… just a girl… just a girl….

…. A pretty cool girl.

Long dark brown hair swings forward as the pale skinned woman examines the titles on the CDs in front of her. Impatiently she pulls it back, tucking the strands behind her ears. She flips several forward in the container and then carefully pulls out three Los Campesinos CDs.

She smiles as she looks through the titles, her mind on Chance instead of the music for a moment. He was such a nice person, volunteering at The Haven. She didn't understand why he asked so many questions, though. She'd been so irritated at first, but now she kind of liked it. It felt nice to question things, though it was always such a difficult task to answer.

"Dani, what do you like?"Chance had asked.

"I like music." Dani whispers aloud as she goes back to flipping through titles. "I like banana bread, and omelets." She finds the Green Day CDs and starts grabbing one of each. "I like..." she thinks of Chance again and blushes.

The small plastic basket on her left arm is already heavily filled with CDs ranging from Fallout Boy to Pink Floyd to Bach. The bouncy preteen next to Dani grabs her hand as soon as it's free to yank her over to another isle. Gale drops Dani's hand as soon as they reach the other isle, saying "Hey you're cold, you should wear gloves!"

Dani's smile drops as she glances away from Gale, pretending to be looking through this new section. Ever since her first death, she was cold to the touch. With her second death, she was colder still. She feels so awkward when people touch her. It reminds her far too much that she's crossed to the other side.

She does not realize she is frowning when she puts the CDs in front of the cashier. She does not realize how her eerily pale gray eyes cause the cashier to ring her out as quickly as possible, hoping desperately that he's not assisting a Super Villain with her purchases.

As soon as they've left the store, Dani stops at a trash can and starts ripping open packages, until she has her new discman set up with batteries and earbuds. She pulls the CD Chance made her out of the pocket of her trench and places it carefully within the player. She slips the earbuds into her ears and presses play. As the music begins to play, her lips gradually slide back into a smile...
